11 June 2010 - FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa

So after 6 years of planning and anticipation the 2010 FIFA World Cup started today. What a day - I tell you the whole country was in a party mood and the atmosphere was electric all over the place. I had the family and some friends over for the opening ceremony and the first match between South Africa and Mexico. The game was amazing and South Africa scored the first goal of the tournament and in the end the game was a draw of 1-1. I must say I was very impressed with our Bafana Bafana and so happy about the score.

9 June 2010 - United for Bafana

With the 2010 Soccer World Cup only days (hours) away it was time to get the spirit going and the concept of "unite for Bafana" was born. At 12pm today everyone was asked to go outside, cheer and blow their vuvazelas for 5 minutes to show their support for the local soccer team (Bafana Bafana).

So off we went at 11h55 and wow what a crowd. We were just on the street outside the office and there were at least a hundred people celebrating and the cars driving past hooting - even the fire brigade joined in. The vibe was unbelieveable (and very noisy :)). Next thing there is the sound of drums and the official Mexican supporters team joined the crowd anbd really got things going. It was an awesome experience and one I will never forget.

22 May 2010 - Super 14 rugby in Soweto

On Saturday Ed and I attended the Super 14 semi-final rugby match in Soweto - what an experience and a totally historic occassion. The game was between the Blue Bulls (from Pretoria) and the Crusaders (from New Zealand). This game would normally have been played at Loftus in Pretoria - the home-turf of the Bulls, but due to the stadium being used for the World Cup Soccer to be held in South Africa in a few week's time (starting on 11 June 2010), the stadium had already been handed over to FIFA and thus a new venue was required. The closest and best option was Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg. Orlando Stadium is traditionally a soccer venue and this semi-final game was the first ever rugby game to be played there.

The vibe was amazing and it was SUCH a fun day!
